Three layers, not one

1 · The CEC base set

Section 64 and Section 84 of C22.1:24 — the 64-200 photovoltaic warning sign (white on red, 9.5 mm capitals), the terminals-energized warnings, disconnect identification, the 84-030(2) single-line diagram plate and the 64-218(7) first-responder placard.

2 · ESA’s own set

ESA-SPEC-004 R1 brings the two-power-source warnings and the DG source disconnect identification. ESA Bulletin 64-7-2 adds the UL 9540 evaluation label where a multi-part ESS is stacked, and ESA-SPEC-008 covers field-evaluated installations.

3 · Your LDC

This is where kits fail. Ontario has dozens of local distribution companies and two of the big ones publish their own plate requirements.

Hydro One (DP-12-003 R0, s.2.4.2(j)) wants a MicroDER disconnect switch tag and a derated-capacity plate.

Toronto Hydro (Conditions of Service Ref. 3) wants GENERATOR and LOAD meter identification plates white on black, 75 × 19 mm — a different colour scheme from every other tag on the job, so it has to be cut on different core stock.

Tell us the LDC and it’s handled. Leave it off and you get the ESA-compliant set without the utility plates.

The honest version

ESA does not require lamacoids. Bulletin 64-5-4 Q7/A7 says labels must withstand the elements and be permanent and legible — “for example: lamacoid, engraved metal plate, or equivalent.” Q6/A6 adds that Rules 2-100 and 84-024 require the labels but don’t specify wording. Lamacoid is an accepted example in Ontario, not a mandate.
