The traps that fail inspections

The Canadian Electrical Code sets the base set. The province and the local distribution company build on top of it — and in British Columbia, override it outright.

The one that costs money

British Columbia. BC Hydro fixes its DG System Disconnect identifiers at black lettering on white, 3.5″ × 1″. The CEC base tags stay white-on-red. A B.C. kit therefore has to be cut on two different core stocks — send an all-red kit and the BC Hydro rows fail.

ESA-SPEC-004 R1 · ESA Bulletin 64-5-4 · ESA 64-7-2
ON — Ontario

Adds the two-power-source set and the DG source disconnect. Hydro One (DP-12-003) wants a MicroDER disconnect tag and a derated-capacity plate; Toronto Hydro wants GENERATOR and LOAD meter plates white on black, 75 × 19 mm.

BC Hydro DGTIR-100 · NMIR R1 · FortisBC Rev. 14
BC — British Columbia

Colour trap. BC Hydro fixes the DG System Disconnect identifiers at black on white, 3.5″ × 1″. A red-and-white tag fails. The CEC base tags stay white-on-red, so a B.C. kit is cut on two different core stocks.

TSASK Appendix M · SaskPower ESR Rev. 3
SK — Saskatchewan

Ten labels — the largest provincial add-on in the catalogue. Adopted under the Electrical Inspection Act, so it is enforceable rather than advisory.

MB Hydro Informative Bulletin 64-0
MB — Manitoba

Twelve label types with verbatim wording, site-plan tags and a remote-disconnect locator. The only utility in Canada that names “engraved lamacoid” outright.

Hydro-Québec E.12-01 (2025-11-17) Annexe E · E.12-07
QC — Québec

Eight labels, in French. Several are grommeted hang tags, black on white — lockout tags under CSA Z462 — not engraved plates at all.

NSPI B-64-200, eff. 2024-07-02
NS — Nova Scotia

Nine labels with NSPI’s own wording, which governs over the generic CEC text in NSPI territory. Now reads “DC CONDUCTORS MAY BE ENERGIZED”.

Utility interconnection standards
NL · PE — Newfoundland & P.E.I.

One interconnection plate each on top of the CEC base set.

CEC C22.1:24
AB · NB · NT · YT · NU — Base set only

Nothing additional in the catalogue. Confirm the provincial amendment and the LDC’s interconnection standard before calling a kit complete.
