Standard — the defensible kit
Every placement the code and the utility standard call for. This is what you send when someone else’s inspector is going to look at it.
Minimum — only what the code permits
The same kit with the reductions the rule text itself allows, each with a citation behind it. Nothing an inspector can fail you for comes out. Two mechanisms:
Consolidation the rule allows. On a microinverter job, ESA Bulletin 64-5-4 A11/A12 lets the system ratings go on the 84-030(2) single-line plate instead of a separate plate — that alone removes a 6″ × 8″ at $54.72.
Collapsing meter-and-service-equipment pairs where the meter and the service equipment are genuinely one location.
On an Ontario micro job: $259.92 standard → $205.20 minimum → $155.04 with co-located metering. Same compliance, no corners.
$155 is close to the bottom for a code-complete Ontario grid-tied kit at $1.14/sq-in, and most of what’s left is two 6″ × 4″ plates — the single-line diagram and the first-responder placard — that carry the content making them big.
You cannot shrink 14 required labels into a $59 kit at a custom engraving rate. If the price has to be lower, the lever is the rate, not the label count — a stock, pre-nested, no-fill-in SKU has no per-job layout or proofing, and three kits nest on one 610 × 610 sheet. That’s a pricing decision, not a code decision.
Every label with its rule citation, jurisdiction and install location; a nested cut sheet; and a flag list of every blank that must be filled from the job before cutting — ratings, locations, equipment IDs — plus anything only the LDC or the inspector can confirm.
